Wawuwan Formation

Wawuwan Fm

Period:
Permian

Age Interval:
P (71), latest Cisuralian to earliest Guadalupian epochs (latest-Early to earliest-Middle Permian)

Province:
Hubei

Type Locality and Naming

The type section is located in the Wawuwan area of Gaotang Region, Fangxian County, Hubei Province. It was named by the Regional Geological Survey Party of Hubei Province in 1975, and was cited publicly for the first time by the Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources of Hubei Province in 1990.

Lithology and Thickness

Dolomite. Representing a suite of carbonate sequence composed of dark-grey and grey-black fine-crystalline dolomites, intercalated with black shale or carbonaceous shale. It consists mainly of grey-black, medium- and thick-bedded fine-crystalline dolomites, intercalated with carbonaceous shale and dolomite; containing phosphorus and pyrite concretions.

Lithology Pattern:
Dolomite

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Its relationship with the underlying strata is changeable from being in a conformable contact with the underlying Liangshan Fm to being in a disconformable contact with the underlying Reping Fm of the Silurian System.

Upper contact

Regional extent

Distributed essentially in an alignment of Zhulin area to the Fangxian County of Hubei Province. From the Gaotang area of Fangxian County westward to the Dashui Trench and Lutou Gorge of the Zhushan Mt. the formation has gradually been changed into clayey dolomite, intercalated with silty ferruginous shale; and till the Lutou Gorge it has been changed into interbeds of dark-grey medium- and thick-bedded limestones and shales, with a thickness of 7-12 m. It has gradually been thinning from east to west.

Fossils

Fusulinids represented by Schwagerina sp.; corals such as Tachylasma magnum and T. cf. yungsinense; and Brachiopods such as Urushtenia sp., Athyris sp., Martinia cf. triquetra, Dictyoclostoidea sp., Uncinunellina sp., etc.

Age

In the Xiagaochuan area of the Xixiang County of Shaanxi Province, the strata corresponding to the formation are composed of grey-black siltstone and limestone, with a thickness of 41-57 m, belonging to the Xiangbo’an Stage of the Yangsingian Epoch = latest Cisuralian to earliest Guadalupian epochs (latest-Early to earliest-Middle Permian)
